Growing Cherry Trees in the U.S.

Published by cheappay on Monday, March 15, 2010 - 13:41:22 - Filed under Cherry Trees

Wondering where the best and worst places to grow cherry trees are?

**For fruit cherry trees —
BEST: Zones 4 - 9 (which run from coast to coast)
WORST: Upper parts of North Dakota, Wyoming, and Wisconsin

**For flowering cherry trees —
BEST: Zones 5 - 8
WORST: North and South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, Upper Wyoming, Florida, and anything below Houston, Texas or below New Orleans, Louisiana

**Cherry trees require:

- good sun
- well aerated ground
- a hole dug at least the size of the roots to plant in, slightly deeper than the root ball
- pack the soil around the ball after planting
- mulch and topsoil
- ground that is not low-lying (cold and frost will settle there; not good)
- 20 foot spread to grow (not near power lines, fences, buildings, etc)
- plant in either spring or fall
- water thoroughly for the first few weeks

How to Grow Flowering Cherry Trees

1. When planting a flowering cherry tree in your garden be sure to keep each young seedling at least 10 feet apart from one another. Therefore, you must have a yard large enough to accommodate the growth of the cherry trees.

2. Normally cherry trees are found in areas with good moisture, so if you are growing in a drier area, make sure they get as much water as needed to proliferate.

3. It is necessary to provide good, fertile soil that is well-drained yet retains sufficient moisture. Providing lots of water and adding fertilizer helps to advance the growth of the cherry trees. If your soil is rocky or sandy you will need to provide enough compost to ensure the appropriate amount of soil nutrients.

4. The cherry tree will need a good balance of sun exposure and yet enough shade to retain the moisture it needs.

5. Cherry tree seedlings may be small but they grow relatively fast and are sure to bloom within a year or two.

Good luck!
